Conference Events

  • Japan House Workshop - Chado, The Way of Tea

    Chado, the Way of Tea, is a revered art form that teaches peacefulness through a bowl of tea. Embodying Japanese traditions, culture, and aesthetics, the Way of Tea is an intimate shared experience that can be used to celebrate and honor a special guest or occasion – or simply spark joy and bring a moment of tranquility. Japan House is pleased to welcome you for a special private tea ceremony. This incredibly special experience will last 1 hour and includes a brief tour of Japan House and the gardens, the tea ceremony, a Q&A session, and a workshop on how to whisk and serve each other a bowl of tea! All guests will be able to enjoy a bowl of matcha and wagashi (traditional Japanese sweet). We ask that guests bring clean white socks and dress comfortably to sit in the tearoom.

    Scavenger Hunt

    Explore UIUC’s vibrant campus through an exciting scavenger hunt, and form connections with your group members as you work together to solve a great mystery.

  • Improving JSA

    Meet, discuss, and share ideas with other JSA boards and members from across the Midwest to improve your universities JSA. Each school will have a representative present their schools JSA events, structure, and any other information the school would like to share. This will be followed by a group discussions regarding different topics.

  • Trivia & Games

    Join the MJSA for a competitive classroom gameshow that requires knowledge, strategy, and occasional collaboration to win. All you need is a cell phone, and you are good to go!

    We also recommend the Krannert Art Museum and Spurlock Museum, which are both less than a 15 minute walk from our conference location.

MJSA will be arranging four-person rooms at Motel 6 at a reduced group rate until 9/22. If you would like to share a room with 1-2 other guests, please list their names during payment.

If you have 3 other people (4 people total) you would like to share a room with, please call Motel 6 at 1-800-544-4866 and mention MJSA or the Group Confirmation code GPS1UVGAAN and directly pay for room. In this case, you do not need to add the hotel fee to your cart.

If you do not have a shared room preference, you will be randomly assigned a room based on gender.

  • Hotel fees will cost $80 per person for a room from 10/6-10/8. This is a reduced rate organized by MJSA and Motel 6. After September 22nd, the room rate may increase.

  • Lodging fee will be refunded until 10/02/23.

  • To request a roommate, please write the other person’s full name in the designated text box during checkout. For groups that total four people, please call the phone number listed in the description and pay Motel 6 directly.

    If you have less than four people, you and your requested roommates may have randomly assigned roommates to equal a total of four people. When assigning roommates, we may also ask your gender identity in case you/another attendee are randomly placed. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Travel Reimbursement

MJSA will reimburse a portion of the travel cost. The value of the reimbursement is determined by the distance from your respective university to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign multiplied by the IRS mileage rate of $0.14 per mile for a charitable organization. (Per car for at least 4 people, including the driver.)
